CDA 93’s Win Surf Cup

After winning six matches in three days, the CDA 93’s captured the 2009 u-16 Surf Cup super group title. The team traveled with an 18 man roster to San Diego and received contributions from all members throughout a grueling weekend of soccer. The team had an opportunity to play against some of the best u-16 teams in the nation.

The CDA 93’s opened the tournament playing against a very strong Real So Cal side. It was an 8:00 kick off and the boy’s were ready to play on the beautifully kept Polo Fields. With goals from Cody Giddings, Matt LaGrassa, and Connor Hallisey, CDA was able to defeat Real So Cal by a score of 3-1.

In the afternoon, CDA faced the Oklahoma State Champions, NYSA Celtic 94 Green. CDA got on the board early when Seth Casiple finished his opportunity after a combo with Matt LaGrassa. Soon after, Casiple proved to be provider when he served in a corner from the right side that Kellen Crow finished off with a powerful header. LaGrassa provided his second assist of the game when he found Kolby Mitnick for the third goal. Cody Giddings assisted Marwan Nazanda for the fourth goal of the match to give the CDA a 4-0 victory.

The third and final group match saw the CDA face off with an extremely talented Aztecs FC Premier side. According to the GotSoccer website, Aztecs FC Premier is the #1 u-16 boy’s team in the nation. Many college coaches enjoyed watching a great game played by both sides. Aztecs looked very strong in the first half. Jon Murray kept his team in the game with two outstanding first half saves. However, before the break, Aztecs struck first and took a 1-0 lead into the half. After the break, CDA found a way to raise their level and start putting their mark on the match. As the game opened up, the CDA depth seemed to allow the team to take over the match. Cody Giddings stuck away the equalizer on an assist from Connor Hallisey. Then, Matt LaGrassa put away a cannon of a goal on what turned out to be the game winner. Once again it was Hallisey that provided the assist.

On to the quarterfinals, the CDA side met up with the Slammers in what turned out to be the most exciting game of the weekend. Although CDA created many chances in the first half, they were not able to put away a goal. Then, with minutes remaining in the first half, Slammers took a 1-0 lead off an unfortunate own goal. Slammers were well organized in the second half playing with a lead and made things very difficult for CDA. With only minutes remaining Seth Casiple drove in a cross which Matt LaGrassa hit on a first time volley to send the game directly to penalties. Andreas Garcia proved to be the hero when he saved two of the four penalties that he faced. Casiple, Nazanda, Schiffel, and Thompson all finished off their spot kicks to help send CDA to the semis.

In the semis, CDA faced the Central California Aztecs. CDA had some decent looks at goal, but had to go into the break tied 0-0. However, it only took 10 seconds into the second half for CDA to find their goal. Cody Giddings received a pass off the kick off and crossed a ball which was slotted home by Kendall Modiste. With neither team able to find the net the rest of the way, CDA won the match 1-0.

The final capped off a long and enjoyable weekend of soccer. CDA met up with a very strong Pateadores side in the final match. Casiple, who moved to Sacramento a year ago, would be playing against his old team in the most important match of the weekend. Cody Giddings put away a pair of goals to give CDA a 2-0 final victory. The first goal was swung in from Hallisey, and the second was set up by Casiple.

Congratulations to the CDA 93’s for becoming the 2009 u-16 boy’s Surf Cup Champions. Strong contributions from all members helped the team win the cup. Goalkeepers Murray and Garcia combined to only allow three goals in six matches against some outstanding competition. Center backs Grant Silvester and Austin Dunn anchored a stingy back line. Connor Swartz, Kellen Crow, and Gabe Lock were able to shut down the flanks in their outside back positions. Well done CDA 93’s.
